The Lagos State Government has announced the Official Lagos Fanti Carnival, a celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture and the enduring legacy of the Fanti people, scheduled for Monday, April 6, 2026, at Tafawa Balewa Square. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
In a statement on Tuesday, the government described the carnival as “a homecoming a bridge between past and future, tradition and modernity,” highlighting its role in strengthening cultural ties between West Africa and the diaspora.
“The Official Lagos Fanti Carnival is a grand celebration of Afro-Brazilian heritage, honouring the rich cultural legacy of the Fanti people and their enduring connection between West Africa and the diaspora,” the statement read.
The carnival will feature traditional music, dance, colorful costumes, and exhibitions reflecting the fusion of African and Brazilian cultures. Organisers said the event aims to promote cultural tourism, encourage artistic expression, and foster unity among communities.
Officials added that the carnival will provide a platform for local artisans, performers, and culinary experts to showcase their talents, while also educating visitors about the historical significance of the Fanti people and their influence on Afro-Brazilian traditions.
Lagos State described the event as an opportunity to celebrate heritage, attract international visitors, and strengthen the cultural bridge between Nigeria and the global African diaspora. The government encouraged residents and tourists to attend and participate in the day-long festivities.
Cultural observers say the carnival is expected to boost Lagos’ reputation as a hub for Afro-diasporic events and contribute to the city’s vibrant tourism and creative sectors.
