Nigeria’s Senate has approved an extension for the implementation of the 2025 budget, particularly for capital projects, with the new deadline set for June 2026.
The decision, according to lawmakers, is intended to allow the government sufficient time to complete ongoing projects affected by funding challenges and other delays.
Senators have warned that without the extension, several key projects, including roads, schools, and hospitals, could be abandoned.

They further stated that the move is aimed at ensuring proper utilization of public funds and the completion of infrastructure for national development.
In reaction, some experts have supported the extension, noting that it could reduce waste and improve project delivery.
However, others have emphasized the need for more effective planning to prevent recurring delays in budget execution.
The federal government has since assured citizens of its commitment to using the extended period efficiently to complete priority projects.
Meanwhile, civil society groups have called for greater transparency and accountability, urging regular updates on fund utilization.
