Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has revealed why he declined the club’s captain armband from teammate İlkay Gündogan during Saturday’s 3-1 Turkish Super Lig victory over Alanyaspor.
Osimhen, who scored and assisted a goal in the match, played a pivotal role as Galatasaray extended its lead at the top of the Super Lig to five points. Despite his standout performance, the captain’s armband was instead worn by midfielder Lucas Torreira, who led the team onto the pitch.
Speaking after the game, Osimhen explained that his decision was out of respect for the club hierarchy and seniority among teammates. He stated that he felt it was appropriate for an experienced player like Torreira to assume the captaincy, emphasizing team unity over individual recognition.
“It was a great win, and I am happy with my contribution on the field,” Osimhen said. “But the armband is not about one player; it’s about leadership and responsibility. Lucas is a senior player and a natural choice to lead the team.”
