Former Liverpool star Rinsola Babajide has announced her decision to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria, citing her desire to play in the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and her Nigerian heritage.
Born in London, Babajide rose through the ranks of England’s youth teams, earning caps at U18, U19, and U23 levels. She was also a key member of the Young Lionesses squad that secured bronze at the 2018 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
Despite her achievements with England, Babajide revealed that representing Nigeria has been a lifelong ambition. “I’ve always dreamed of playing in WAFCON and connecting with my Nigerian roots,” she said. “This is a proud moment for me, and I’m excited to contribute to the Super Falcons’ success.”
FIFA recently approved Babajide’s switch of association, allowing her to compete for Nigeria in official competitions. The decision marks a significant boost for the Super Falcons, who will benefit from her experience and versatility in attack.

The forward’s move also highlights a growing trend of dual-nationality players choosing to represent African nations, bringing international exposure and skill to domestic squads. Fans and analysts have welcomed the development, expecting Babajide to make an immediate impact in upcoming continental competitions.
As preparations for WAFCON intensify, Nigeria’s coaching staff will look to integrate Babajide quickly into the squad, hoping her European experience and international pedigree will strengthen their bid for the prestigious continental title.
