Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Tuesday donated copies of his book to Yakubu Gowon University and called on Nigerians to take an active role in documenting their history.
The event in Abuja featured the presentation of Mohammed’s book, Headlines & Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration, along with the launch of a literacy advocacy programme, the ‘Reading Sessions Project,’ aimed at promoting reading culture across tertiary institutions nationwide. Details of the ceremony were outlined in a statement by his media aide, Nnamdi Atupulazi.
Mohammed described the publication as a first-hand account of governance during the immediate past administration, covering his nearly eight-year tenure from 2015 to 2023. He said the book was intended to preserve an accurate historical record and encourage citizens to actively document events shaping the nation.
“The book captures key media moments that defined the administration and provides insight into governance challenges and achievements,” Mohammed said, emphasizing the importance of personal and institutional documentation.
The literacy initiative aims to foster a culture of reading and research among students, enabling them to critically engage with Nigeria’s history and current affairs. Organizers said the programme will include regular reading sessions, discussions, and mentorship opportunities for tertiary students.
Observers noted that Mohammed’s efforts underscore the intersection of governance, historical preservation, and educational development, highlighting the role of civic engagement in shaping public understanding of Nigeria’s political landscape.
